The Requisite Holiday Trip to the Emergency Room

Babs has had a really rough week. We've all had a really rough week. Remember our less than restful night sleep? Well, this story just picks up where I left off.....

Tuesday night we were at a friends house for dinner and games and having a wonderful time. Their little girl is Lolly's age and they play well together and with Babs. The big girls were downstairs watching Cinderella after dinner, the grown ups were playing dominoes (I was totally winning!) and Babs was wandering happily around playing with any toy she chose without interference from her helpful older sister.

After about 4 rounds I heard the worst sound I have heard in my entire life up to this point. It was my poor baby Babs falling down the stairs. Not just any old stairs. Thirteen wooden stairs followed by a wood floor. I tell you I heard her hit on each of those 13 stairs. It was awful. The longest fall ever. We were half way down the stairs by the time she hit the bottom and when my friend picked her up (she was the first to get there) is when we saw the blood. There was much blood and screaming. We decided that it would probably be a good idea to call 911. By the time the paramedics got there Babs had soaked her shirt and half a hand towel with blood and the bruises on her face were in full bloom. Thankfully, she had started to calm down. Which is good because that left me more available to freak out.

I should further explain what we found at the bottom of the stairs....this picture kind of shows it. It was taken with the cell phone so it's not the best.
Two of her bottom teeth were poking forward and leaving the roots pointing toward the back of her mouth.

As Babs and I were leaving in the ambulance, Lolly was very upset and asked that her Daddy take a picture of her to show Babs how sad she was that she had fallen. It's a heart breaker.
But Lolly did get to stay at her friends house for her first Big Girl Sleepover! It pretty much made up for any trauma and was a huge relief to us knowing that she was being well taken care of and was happy where she was at. We were at the hospital until 1:30 in the morning so it really is good that Lolly did not join us for this particular experience.

We got to the hospital and everyone took very good care of our baby girl. They ended up having to pull her two teeth, but her CT scan showed there was no damage to her head and she didn't break any bones.
Here she is in the room while we were waiting to see what the plan was.
Here's Babs after waking up from the sedation used to remove her teeth and eating a cherry popsicle. As you can tell, one side of her mouth was still numb. Isn't she just adorable?!And here are some pictures from the day after....
The shirt
The smile!
And 48 hours later....
She climbed into a basket of clean (of course!) laundry and is putting on Lolly's panties.
By this time, she's really sick of mom taking pictures. In my defense, it's hard to get pictures of bruises on a baby that is in constant motion!
All I can say is that it was truly amazing how quickly we went from being upset that it had happened to being grateful that that was all that happened. Unfortunately, that does not ease the feeling of being the worst mother in the entire world....in case you were wondering....

The holidays just aren't complete without a 911 call, right?! Um, no. Here's to a Happy New Year with no trips to the emergency room.

Poor girl! And poor mama! That sounds horribly traumatic, though she doesn't seem to mind now that it's in the past. My heart was thumping when I read about the sound on the stairs. Ugh. I can just hear it. How awful! I'm so glad everything's okay. ((hugs))

This is truly a mom's worst nightmare, especially when you spend all your time to keep them safe. It really leaves a feeling of helplessness. You are a great mom and the bad feelings will settle down, especially when you look at that sweet little smile. It is so endearing. She was adorable before, now she just steals your heart away. So grateful she is fine and amazingly not very traumatized. You, on the other hand, will need some time to heal your tattered nerves, but the nightmare will give way to happier things. xoxoxo

Ohhh. I'm so sorry! I love the picture with her cute smile without the teeth. You got to love that there are going to be many pictures to come to remind you of this incident. I'm so glad she's alright and hopefully you're not being too hard on yourself. ;)

What a trooper! Looks like a nightmare for both you and hubby! Babs seems to be quite a strong little lady with all those grins after such a dramatic fall.

I'm glad she is okay! Oh my, it sounded terrible reading about it!! I know that sound as I just heard it two weeks ago when my 4 year old niece somersaulted backwards from the top of the stairs to the bottom getting only a small scratch on her ankle. It truly is a terrible sound!!!! Little ones bounce back quicker than we do. Bad mommy guilt is the worst! Really you couldn't have stopped it so don't beat yourself up! The bruises will fade, the teeth will eventually grow back and she'll be just fine.
