Recipe Swap Wednesday-Sweet Potatoes or Yams

Rumor has it that there is a difference between sweet potatoes and yams.  But I don't know what it is.  And this particular recipe that my wonderful sister in law gave me last year refers to both sweet potatoes and yams.  So I'll just let you make an educated guess and enjoy.

This recipe is actually pretty amazing.  I'm not a fan of yams, but I really like this recipe.  But I am still firmly against canned yams and putting marshmallows on them.  That's just so wrong.  On the other hand, these sweet potatoes/yams will me making an appearance at our Thanksgiving feast.

Thanksgiving Sweet Potatoes
Combine:
3 cups yams, mashed
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs
1/2 cup milk

Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.

For topping combine:
1 cup Honey Bunches of Oats Cereal, crushed
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup butter

Sprinkle over the top and bake for an additional 15 minutes.

I love sweets, and I love potatoes, but I don't love sweet potatoes. Weird.

Yams are the best. I make it my mission in life to make everyone love the yams I make for Thanksgiving since there are crazy people that don't love them.

I don't have a recipe written down---but a lot of times I make an apple pie filling and layer it with sliced yams. There are never left-overs:)

in my book it's a yam, orangy in color, and oh so delicious bathed in melted brown sugar & butter... and YES with marshmallows on top (toasted a lovely golden brown)!! so glad to know you are no longer anti-yam!!

Hmm, might have to give this a try, looks yummy!

I heard a rumor, but I don't know where so I don't know how reliable, that we don't have true yams in the US, they are just too difficult to keep good in shipping, so we crazy Americans just call sweet potatoes by both names and don't care if we are wrong. Whatever they are called, I like them best tempura style. When it doubt, dip it in dough and fry it!
